The City of a Thousand Delights

Bangkok's name is not "Bangkok," though few people would go out of their way to pronounce the umpteen syllable official name. More often it is called Krung Thep, or the City of Angles, not unlike the Southern California sprawl I had left so long ago. Yet, this steamy city of a thousand delights is more like some twisted vision of Los Angeles, taken past the point of absurdity. It is a full frontal assault on your senses, with a mix of smells, noises, sight and sounds that will leave you reeling.

I'm used to crowds, growing up in a rabbit warren, but I still was somewhat surprised by the intensity. Everywhere you turn there are people, cars and a thick brown coat of smog filling the sky right down to the choppy brown water of the "River of Kings", known locally as Chao Phraya River. So many cars, so many mopeds, so many tuk-tuks that traveling even a short distance require careful planning and a bit of luck. Your best bet is to take the waterways, ignoring the seductive allure of the over-priced water-taxis, and hopping on board the Chao Phraya River Express boats, 7 baht (20 cents) for as long as you can stand it.
