Potemkin's Toontown

There is a lesson to be learned here; Toontown is undoubtably an educational experience. Unlike the crime infested Toon ghetto depicted in Roger Rabbit, this is a neo-nirvana of Toons. There is no violence, no poverty, no anti-Toon discrimination. One is to look up to this pinnacle of society and experience the perfect lives of Disney characters. It's a place for small children to find out their social roles, the Disney way.

"The original idea of Mickey's Toontown was for our guests to meet Mickey, in his home and in his neighborhood," said Walt Disney Imagineering Senior Show Producer Dave Burkhart. "We didn't want to make it just a set, but a living, breathing, 3-dimensional cartoon environment." Mickey and his buddies each were given "a house, attraction or activity designed to reflect the character's unique personality."

For those of you who've forgotten the complex dimensions of Mickey's persona, rest assured that he is a family values kind of mouse. Mickey may live next to his sweetheart, Minnie, but they never sleep together. Nonetheless, Mickey is pretty well set up, with a huge house, including a movie studio and a complete set. There was even a drawer in the Prop Room marked "Mushroom Caps."
